Reviving Chinese Chess: A 3D Printed Innovation

Designer Lingfang Shen Transforms Traditional Game into a Modern Masterpiece

Lingfang Shen, along with team members Huihui Yang, Run Su, Xuanci Xie, and Yangying Ye, embarked on a mission to rejuvenate the ancient game of Chinese Chess. Their aim was to appeal to the younger generation and expand the game's market share, thereby preserving this unique aspect of Chinese culture.

The project, named "Chess Drama," is a three-dimensional reimagining of the traditional game. The designers used 3D printing technology to create more engaging and aesthetically pleasing chess pieces. The pieces were meticulously researched, drafted, and adjusted to create the perfect model that could fit the board of Chinese Chess while minimizing consumables.

Chess Drama is not just a game; it's a statement. It challenges the public's perception of traditional chess and aims to highlight the historical and cultural features of China. The design process was not without its challenges. The team had to constantly adjust the 3D printing process to ensure the pieces were distinguishable from Western chess and reflected an oriental aesthetic.

The project started in May and was completed in July 2016 in Shanghai. The pieces of the game were produced using photopolymer resin, which was then polished and spray-painted. The chessboard was created using acrylic laser cutting and CNC processing.

Chess Drama has been recognized for its innovative design and cultural significance. It was awarded the Golden A' 3D Printed Forms and Products Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is granted to creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advance art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
